Disaster Plan

Being a responsible pet owner is the first step to protecting yourself and your pet.  Living in Florida we all should have a disaster plan if an emergency should happen.  If you are evacuated from your home and you go to a local shelter, you will be accepted, but your pet will not.  There are only a very few shelters that accept pets.  One less thing for you to worry about during an emergency is where your pet will be and who will take care of them.  Reserve your pets place with us before an emergency happens.  There is limited space available.

The following is a list of items your pet will need for his/her "Survival Kit":

  1. Collar with ID and Rabies tags and a sturdy leash
  2. Any medications that your dog will require (30 day supply)
  3. Medical records and vaccination information
  4. Crate or carrier
  5. Food (at least 14 days supply)
  6. Zip lock bags for treats, important papers and toys
  7. Brush and comb
  8. Blankets or any special comfort item
  9. Muzzle if necessary
  10. Mark all pet belongings with name

If you should be interested in signing your dog up for our hurricane emergency shelter. please feel free to ask a staff member for more details.

The Socialization Test

The socialization test is approximately one hour long.  You will drop off your pet and he/she will be introduced to the group of dogs that are currently staying at the kennel.  They are always introduced one dog at a time starting with my two Golden Retrievers Beau and Maggie.  The introductions are at your dogs pace.  A new dog will only be introduced when your pet feels comfortable with the group.  After all introductions have been made, your dog is than invited outdoors where he/she is observed interacting with a group of dogs in a supervised setting.  Some like to get right in there and start playing with the group, while others just walk around and investigate the area.

The following is a list of social skills that will be rated:

  1. No aggression towards dogs or humans.
  2. First introduction to a new dog.
  3. Ease of meeting and greeting.
  4. Several dogs meeting and greeting.
  5. Observation of dog investigating his new environment.
  6. Playfulness with other dogs.
  7. Toy aggression.
  8. Treat time, does your dog wait his turn for a treat. (This step is only done if the dog does not have food aggression.)
  9. Laying together as a group indoors.
  10. Mark all pet belongings with name

**If your pet passes all of the above they will be invited to stay with us.
**If there is a problem with one of the steps above, this will be discussed at the time of pick up.
**There is a one time fee of $10.00 for the Socialization Test.
